UPI

Also known as: Unified Payments Interface, UPI payment, NPCI UPI

Unified Payments Interface — India's real-time instant payment system that lets users transfer money directly between bank accounts using just a phone number, UPI ID, or QR code.

UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is the payment rail built by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and launched in 2016. It is the dominant retail payment system in India in 2026 — over 14 billion transactions are processed monthly across more than 600 banks. UPI lets you transfer money instantly between any two Indian bank accounts using a UPI ID (a virtual address like `name@bank`), a registered mobile number, or a QR code scan.

UPI works through apps — Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, Amazon Pay, plus every major bank’s own app. The transaction confirms in seconds, money debits and credits in real-time, and the cost to the user is zero for most peer-to-peer and consumer-to-merchant transfers. UPI also powers nearly every booking and checkout flow in India — from train tickets to electricity bills to coffee shop payments.

The security model uses two-factor authentication: the UPI ID and a UPI PIN that you set during onboarding. The PIN is never shared with merchants — every transaction requires explicit PIN entry on your device. Variants like UPI Lite (for small-value transactions under ₹500) bypass the PIN step for faster payment, and UPI AutoPay handles recurring payments. The most common UPI fraud pattern is scammers tricking users into authorising a payment FROM their account by disguising a collect-request as a refund — entering the PIN to RECEIVE money is always the red flag.
