IRCTC iPay
Also known as: iPay IRCTC, IRCTC payment gateway
IRCTC's in-house payment gateway. Charges ₹5 less per booking than external cards, authenticates faster, and is the recommended payment method for Tatkal bookings where every second counts.
IRCTC iPay is the payment gateway built and operated by IRCTC itself, launched to reduce dependency on third-party payment processors. When you book a train ticket through the IRCTC Rail Connect app or website, iPay appears as a payment option alongside cards, net banking, UPI apps, and wallets — and using iPay is consistently the fastest and cheapest of the lot.
The two practical advantages: (1) Cost — iPay charges ₹5 LESS per booking than external card payments because there is no payment-processor fee passed through; (2) Speed — iPay authentication completes in 1-3 seconds versus 5-15 seconds for external card 3DS flows or bank-app redirects. For Tatkal bookings, where the entire reservation window closes in 60-90 seconds, this speed advantage is the single biggest determinant of whether the booking confirms or fails.
Setup requires linking a bank account to your IRCTC account once. After that, iPay can also be funded from a stored UPI ID, debit card, or net banking — and it remembers the default so payment requires only the UPI PIN or card OTP. Combining iPay with UPI Lite (where supported) drops the authentication to a single tap with no PIN needed for amounts under ₹500.
