Waitlist
Also known as: WL, WL ticket, Waitlisted ticket, RAC
A reservation status when no seat is currently available — the booking holds a queue position (WL/8 = eighth in line) and may confirm if earlier passengers cancel before chart preparation.
Waitlist is an Indian Railways reservation status applied when the train’s booked quota is full at the time of your booking. The ticket is issued with a queue identifier — WL/8 means you are eighth in line behind 7 other waitlisted passengers; WL/3 means third. Each cancellation by an earlier-booked confirmed passenger advances the waitlist by one position. If your waitlist position reaches 0 before chart preparation (typically 4 hours before departure), the ticket auto-confirms and a seat is allocated.
Waitlist comes in three sub-types: General Waitlist (the standard form), Tatkal Waitlist (separate queue for Tatkal-booked tickets, harder to clear because Tatkal has very few cancellations), and PQWL / Pooled Quota Waitlist (for intermediate-station bookings on long-distance trains). The behaviour at chart preparation differs slightly between sub-types, but the principle is the same: position must reach 0 or lower for the ticket to confirm.
If the waitlist does not clear by chart preparation, e-tickets are automatically cancelled and refunded (paper PRS tickets must be cancelled manually). The refund processes back through the original payment method within 3-7 working days for IRCTC direct bookings, longer for aggregator-booked tickets. Use ConfirmTkt or the IRCTC PNR lookup to monitor your waitlist position daily — a position that climbs HIGHER instead of dropping is the early warning that the ticket will not clear, and the time to book a backup on a different train.
