CIBIL Score
Also known as: CIBIL, credit score India, TransUnion CIBIL
A three-digit credit score (300–900) calculated by TransUnion CIBIL that Indian lenders use to evaluate your creditworthiness for loans, credit cards, and EMIs.
CIBIL Score — formally the TransUnion CIBIL Score — is the most widely used credit rating in India. It ranges from 300 (poor) to 900 (excellent), based on your repayment history, credit utilization, length of credit history, credit mix, and recent inquiries. Indian banks and NBFCs almost universally check CIBIL before approving credit cards, home loans, personal loans, and consumer EMIs.
A score above 750 is considered strong; below 650 makes most loan approvals difficult. Late payments, defaults, high credit-card utilization, and frequent loan applications all reduce the score. Checking your own score does not affect it.
For identity theft monitoring, the free annual CIBIL report is the most important credit-monitoring tool in India. New accounts opened in your name, hard inquiries you did not authorize, or sudden score drops are early warning signs that someone is misusing your details. Rotate through CIBIL, Experian India, and CRIF Highmark each year for continuous free credit visibility.
