Whey Protein Isolate
Also known as: WPI, isolate whey
A highly filtered form of whey protein with 90%+ protein by weight and almost no lactose, fat, or carbs. Ideal for people with mild lactose sensitivity or strict calorie budgets.
Whey protein isolate is whey that has been further filtered after the initial extraction, removing most of the lactose, fat, and carbohydrates that remain in standard whey concentrate. The result is a powder that is typically 90% protein by weight or higher, mixes thinly in water, and is well tolerated by people with mild lactose intolerance.
The nutritional difference versus whey concentrate (which is around 80% protein with more lactose, fat, and carbs) is meaningful for athletes on tight calorie budgets, post-workout shakes where rapid absorption matters, or anyone who experiences bloating from standard whey. The taste tends to be cleaner — there is simply less of the milky residue.
The trade-off is price: whey isolate costs roughly 30-50% more per kilogram than whey concentrate. For most recreational lifters, whey concentrate is the correct value choice. Isolate makes sense for competitive athletes, cutting phases, or genuine lactose sensitivity. Whey hydrolysate is a further-processed and faster-absorbing variant at an even higher price point.
