Certified Refurbished
Also known as: manufacturer refurbished, Amazon Renewed
A refurbished electronic device that has been inspected, repaired, and re-tested by the original manufacturer or an authorized partner — usually shipped with a limited warranty.
“Certified Refurbished” means the device has been through a manufacturer-level (or manufacturer-authorized) inspection and repair process. Anything physically damaged is replaced; software is reinstalled to factory state; the unit is re-tested to original specifications. The device ships with a manufacturer warranty — typically 90 days to 1 year — and the certification badge is the buyer’s only assurance that the work was done properly.
The phrase is most trusted when the certifier is the original manufacturer (Apple Certified Refurbished, Dell Certified Refurbished, Samsung Certified Pre-Owned). Third-party certifications vary wildly in quality. Amazon Renewed is generally a good middle ground because Amazon enforces seller standards and offers a 90-day Renewed Guarantee.
Certified Refurbished is the safest entry point for buying used electronics. The savings versus new range from 10% to 40%, the warranty matches new for the covered period, and the failure rate is typically lower than buying an unverified second-hand unit.
